Seven concentration yards, four sawmills and strategically placed warehouses in the United States and overseas make Baillie one of the leading manufacturers and exporters of hardwood lumber.

Business Situation & Challenge
Baillie Lumber’s employees where experiencing problems when trying to access the corporate network from remote locations around the world. This continuous challenge began to quickly result in interfering with employee productivity and timeliness in dealing with customer and partner needs. Baillie Lumber realized this issue had to be addressed if they wanted to continue to grow, as well as run their daily operations as smoothly as possible.

Objectives

  • Improve salesmen/customer communication while traveling.
  • Improve employee productivity while away from the office.
  • Increase user access security when remotely accessing the corporate network.
  • Consolidate current server assets (versus purchasing 4-5 additional servers).
  • Offer remote access to more employees.

Solution
Baillie Lumber and Inergex have been working together on IT-related projects for several years. Due to the relationship and overall confidence in Inergex’s expertise, Baillie Lumber selected Inergex for the project. Inergex provided Baillie Lumber the appropriate resources to help determine what toolset would make the most strategic sense to meet their business and user objectives. In addition, Inergex applied the IN2 Process to ensure the project remained on track, on budget, and in-line with expectations and goals—at every stage of the project life cycle. “Having a methodology (or process) already in place was critical to the success of the project and meeting our expectations,” says John Vitale, Director of Information Systems at Baillie Lumber. After collecting all the pertinent information, Inergex helped determine the right approach to upgrade the existing Citrix environment as it related to the remote access solution and VMware as the tool to consolidate the existing servers. By working closely with Baillie Lumber’s IT team, Inergex helped to deploy the Citrix and VMware solutions to the employees. Inergex also helped to transfer all project knowledge, strategies, and documentation necessary to maintain the solution to the IT team upon completion.

Project Results & Benefits

  • Increased communication between sales representatives and customers while sales representatives are traveling or out of the office. This is particularly important to serve a worldwide customer base.
  • Immediate Return on Investment by using VMware.
